Rally is a good starting point for people new to dog sports. You and your dog navigate a course that contains a varying number of signs. You work as a team, performing the skill required at each sign. Communication with your dog and cheering her/him on is allowed. Rally requires a functional heel (i.e. a tight leash at any point through the course will result in points off and possibly a Not Qualified as a final score).
Rally obedience as a sport has multiple titling levels. Novice and Intermediate levels are performed on leash, any level above that is off leash - hence the requirement for a functional heel.
